How to Build Your Own DIY Terrarium Winter Wonderland
Finding the right holiday gift can be stressful. In fact, it is said that half of all Americans feel anxiety around gift-giving. Luckily, you can’t go wrong when you give the gift of STEM. STEM activities for kids help them develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
Use this guide to learn how to build a festive DIY terrarium.
Step 1: Build Your Kit
When your kit arrives in the mail, the fun can begin. Inside the kit, you’ll find everything you need, including all the necessary pieces and a QR Code to an instructional video.
Follow the instructional video to help you assemble the terrarium. Let your child try a few times. Figuring it out on their own fosters feelings of accomplishment and pride.
If you’re adding water to the terrarium, make sure to waterproof it first. Do this by putting the plants on a plate, tray, or planter containing the water. You can seal the edges with a hot glue gun for additional support.

Step 2: Decide on Decorations
You can decorate with real plants, household items, or both! For example, mini succulents make great terrarium plants that don’t require much watering or maintenance.
Pinecones and glitter can add a wintery touch. Use cotton balls to build snow people and table salt to make the terrarium look like a snowy wonderland.
Step 3: Add Lights
No winter wonderland is complete without lights. Small Christmas lights can bring your terrarium to life. You can find battery-operated LED lights at your local store or online, and the wire strands can be shaped or coiled to fit in and around your holiday terrarium.
